The market is flooded with many health foods and herbs that are implied or claimed to enhance sexual function, leading patients to often ask doctors if these products are effective.
Here, I'll specifically refer to the guidelines from the European Association of Urology regarding recommendations for herbs and natural supplements:
In recent years there has been an exponential growth in the market of medicinal herbs and natural supplements for the treatment of ED, but with very little available evidence of robust scientific data to support their efficacy and safety.
Recently, a Cochrane review showed that ginseng may only have trivial effects on erectile function or satisfaction with intercourse compared to placebo when assessed using validated tools.
Moreover, data suggested that daily administration of oral L-arginine, only when in combination with PDE5I (Phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors ) use, improves sexual function.
The above is the conclusion drawn by a world-class authoritative urology expert organization based on relevant research evidence.
Commentary by Dr. Huang:
Many of the health foods and herbs circulating online have a long history of use.
However, when looking at research history, apart from surgical procedures(penile prosthesis) and injections (Prostaglandin E1, PGE1), there hasn't been a very effective treatment until oral medication (PDE5I) emerged, a dramatic leap in treating erectile dysfunction.
Therefore, hoping for significant therapeutic effects solely from health foods and herbs is undoubtedly going down an unproductive path, resulting in futile efforts and wasted time and money.
Of course, long-term maintenance is necessary, but achieving ideal maintenance effects isn't accomplished through "single" foods or herbs.
It's through a "holistic" approach to a healthy lifestyle, including good dietary and exercise habits.
